Combat in the Cage
Leesburg, VA July 25, 2009
CITC '5th Offense' saw an energetic crowd of spectators from PA, NY, NJ, DE, MD and Virginia. Both NY Top Team and Revolution Academy both brought a substantial crowd quite a distance to support their fighters that evening.
The evening bouts at the Douglas Community Center in Leesburg ended with great submissions, TKOs, and a KO, with only two of the twelve fights going to the judges’ scorecards. In addition, two new champions joined the Combat in the Cage ranks.
The Fight of the Night went to the Flyweight bout between Maryland residents Joshua Peters (Maguilla BJJ/Capital Punishment MMA) and Justin Hughes (Damage Co.). The back and forth battle between these two Flyweights demonstrated top Muay Thai, Wrestling and Jiu-Jitsu skills.
Joey Gambino (NY Top Team) became the New Combat in the Cage Lightweight Champion (Former Champions Al Iaquinta and Will Martinez have both gone into the Pro Ranks) with a quick victory over game ground fighter Chris Clark (Practical MMA). Joey will be defending his Title at the upcoming CITC '6th Offense' Saturday, September 12th against Maryland MA fighter Nick Tissue who also ended his bout quickly against his opponent. Nick, a Welterweight fighter, will be making the drop into the Lightweight ranks to take on the surging Gambino.
Tensions were hot between Revolution Academy and Eternal MA; both schools had the fighters for the night’s main event—a Bantamweight battle between the seasoned Tom Desmond (Eternal MA) and the game Matt Rizzo. Rizzo displayed a superior ground strategy and won the bout by TKO and become the New CITC Bantamweight Champion.
