NORTH AMERICAN AMATEUR COMBAT SPORTS
CHAMPIONSHIPS Muay Thai MMA Kickboxing K-1 North American Amateur Combat
Sports Championships will showcase the best amateurs
in North America On June 18 - 19, 2010, the Combat
Sports League sanctioned by the World Kickboxing
Association - USA will host an elimination
tournament to determine the best fighters in North
America. The event will also be used to select members
for the WKA US National Team that will qualify to
represent the U.S. at the WKA World Championships in
Edinburgh, Scotland. As both the WKA US Nationals and
WKA promoters have grown, it was a natural next step
to open the event to our Canadian and Mexican
neighbors as well as competitors throughout the
world. In response to the growing popularity of MMA,
we have also added a cage, and, with all the youth
talent at so many schools, we will be featuring
Juniors’ divisions at this year’s tournament. The 2010
North Americans will feature the top amateurs from
around the world, challenging for the WKA NORTH
AMERICAN TITLE. This event will feature both Open and
Novice Divisions, with Novice Divisions equating to
those competitors having no more than three wins in
any combative sport (Thai boxing, Full Contact,
Kickboxing, MMA, and Boxing). The Open divisions are
open to all amateur competitors with more than 3
wins. However, if a Novice (three wins or fewer)
chooses to move to the Open class, he/she will not be
allowed to compete as a Novice again.
The event will offer the following amateur
divisions: Ringsports divisions for
adults: Open and Novice in Muay Thai, Kickboxing, and
MMA (Mixed Martial Arts). Ringsports divisions for
juniors (ages 13-17): K-1 and MMA.
Amateur fighters interested in competing in MMA,
Muay Thai, Kickboxing, or K-1 in the North American
Amateur Combat Sports Championships may pre-register
for competition by completing an application that can
be found on WKA USA's official website,
www.wkausa.com.
The fight equipment used at 2010 North American
Combat Sports Championships will be provided by
Fighters Inc.
The World Kickboxing Association is one of the
world’s oldest and most recognized governing bodies
for various forms of Kickboxing. In 2000, the
organization formed the WKA USA to oversee Kickboxing
competition in the United States and, in 2004, WKA USA
added Mixed Martial Arts and Submission Grappling to the portfolio of combat sports that it regulates.
One weekend of the best amateur matches in North
America The two-day WKA/CSL affair will kick off
Friday (June 18th) with fighter registration,
weigh-ins and medicals. These will be open from 3:00
pm to 7:30 pm at the event hotel.
On Saturday, June 19th, at the beautiful new Boo
Williams Sportsplex, MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, and
K-1 divisions will begin and fight
down to the finals. Select finals will be featured in
the Saturday evening Combat Sports Challenge fight
show.
The Amateur MMA single elimination tournament will
be contested under the WKA rules for MMA Division - Class "C". These rules can be seen at
http://www.wkausa.com/amateur-rules-and-regulations.html
and are modeled after the Unified Rules of Conduct.
Competitors will wear slightly oversized gloves and
there will be no elbows, forearms, or knees to the
head standing or grounded. Competitors can register
for either the Open or Novice division, depending
on the competitive experience of each athlete. Both
Novice as well as Open tournament fighters will be
separated into nine different weight classes. Novice
and Open class MMA matches will consist of three
rounds of three minutes each and will progress by way
of single elimination. The victor of each weight
class in the Open division will be crowned the North
American Combat Sports Champion in that class and
US fighters will gain valuable points toward selection
for the US National Team.
