GLORY Rules
WKA USA August 24, 2013 The Westin Hotel,
Richmond, VA
This
weekend’s Combat Sports Challenge (CSC 37), which is
Virginia longest running fight show, was host for the
first GLORY Rules Amateur Kickboxing bouts. The card
featured 15 bouts and three highly contested GLORY
Rules Amateur Title Bouts. In the main event, the 2012
WKA North American Tournament Champion, Axel Mendez,
IL (22-2) was matched up against Adam Edgerton, KY
(15-9), the 2013 WKA North American Tournament
Champion for the newly established WKA GLORY Rules
Amateur US Light
Middleweight (-71kgs/-156.2lbs) Title. These two had
fought in the finals of this year’s WKA NA Tournament
which had Edgerton winning by decision. Both fighters
brought their “A” game and the early rounds seemed too
close to call. However, in the later rounds of this 5
round bout, Edgerton seems to shift from single
attacks to combos. Edgerton continued to mix punches
and kicks to take the title by unanimous decision.
In the co-main event, Shawn Steen, VA (9-1) faced
off against Stan Macebo, CA (10-5) for the GLORY Rules
Amateur US Lightweight (-60kgs/-132lbs) Title. Both
fighters came out throws constant combos at one
another. This fight was a total offensive battle and
became a test of attrition for both. Macebo’s heavy
body kicks seemed to aid him in the later rounds to
fatigue Steen and lead to a unanimous decision by
Mancebo.
The
third title match was a real crowd pleaser, the ladies
set up to vie for the GLORY Rules Eastern Regional
Amateur (-57kgs/-125.4lbs) Title. Hard hitting Aracely
Valenzuela,NC (4-0) squared off against the very
crafty Christy Tyquiengco, VA (7-3). Aracley came out
with the anticipated power shots, but Tyquiengco
managed to score a knockdown with a jump spin back
kick and then a finish with a head kick KO to take the
title.
